Education: Teaching English

The Project

  • Began in September 2008 in Urubamba
  • Carried out by NeVo, with future support from the UGEL (Unidad de Gestión Educativa Local), which manages local education and promotes uniform teaching by qualified educators
  • An initiative to promote quality teaching of the English language in Urubamba

Progress

  • Implemented the use of new materials to complement existing classes
  • Conducted original analysis to identify different needs related to English classes

Goals

  • Continue to identify weaknesses of existing English classes
  • Propose revisions in order to provide low-cost community English classes at a convenient time and location
  • Collaborate with the municipality of Urubamba to recruit volunteers to teach classes and to standardize teaching materials and methods throughout Urubamba

Open Positions

  • Educator to develop and lead English classes at local school and with the artisans
  • Analyst to evaluate current efforts to teach English in Urubamba through the use of interviews with different organizations and students

Education: Educational Analysis Project and Art and Expression Program

The Project

  • Began in November 2009
  • Carried out by NeVo and the Alan Harman Charitable Fund (Alma)
  • A project designed to improve education in Urubamba, both through addressing issues such as teaching quality and through an Arts and Expression Program

Progress

  • NeVo, a local school and individual supporters came together to create a mural
  • Defined six major steps of the Educational Analysis Project
  • Developed plan for Arts and Expression Program

Goals

Educational Analysis Project

  • Diagnosis: Interview teachers, students, and parents to identify key problems, such as teacher motivation and large class size
  • Training: Train teachers and reflect on challenges related to burn-out and quality of education
  • Program: Prepare a program with the help of the Ministry of Education to implement modifications in the schools
  • Follow-up: Create follow-up reports every three months
  • Training: Train parents to participate in their children’s education
  • Increase public served: Start a radio program in Urubamba in order to reach more people

Arts and Expression Program

  • Early Education: Use moldable materials, such as clay, to stimulate creative capacities and help develop psychomotor skills in Media Luna and Yanahuara preschools
  • Primary/secondary Education: Carry out basic drawing and graphic expression workshops with 6th graders from Willa Marcelo and Wiñayninchis elementary schools; lead a project in which students create comic strip style stories that address problems in their communities
  • High School: Hold a poetry and comic strip competition open to all grades in which the top two entries in each category will receive prizes; the works will be displayed publically at the Municipality or in the Main Plaza

Open Positions

  • Artistic Educational Program Leader to lead workshops at grade schools in Urubamba
  • Education Analyst to evaluate the state of education, define major problem areas, and propose strategies for addressing them
