CAMPAIGN AGAINST DISCRIMINATION
Human Rights: Campaign Against Racial Discrimination

The Project

  • Began in May 2009 in Urubamba
  • Carried out by NeVo, with support from the municipality of Urubamba and APRODEH
  • A campaign to disseminate information about racism and discriminatory practices in order to create awareness, promote legislation and encourage social customs based on equality and respect for human rights.

Progress

  • Passage of anti-discrimination ordinance in Urubamba
  • Community activity day in main plaza to raise awareness about racism
  • Taught classes about racism/discrimination ay La Salle and General Ollanta schools in Urubamba

Goals

  • Continue classes and awareness-building activities
  • Evaluate anti-discrimination ordinance and identify methods to improve enforcement
  • Develop a way to promote awareness of the ordinance and appropriate repercussions for violating the law
  • Work with Transparencia Internacional to evaluate situation of racial discrimination in different regions of the county, and how existing legislation corresponds to reality

Open Positions

  • Legal or research intern to help with investigation and fieldwork regarding racial discrimination and anti-discrimination legislation in different regions of Peru
  • Human rights educator to teach classes about racism and evaluate effectiveness of anti-discrimination ordinance in Urubamba
